Gabriel Attal is now France’s youngest and first openly gay Prime Minister.
On Tuesday, France’s President Emmanuel Macron appointed Gabriel Attal as the new Prime Minister, making the 34-year-old the youngest and first openly gay person in this role. This came after Elisabeth Borne stepped down as education minister.
The president chose Mr. Gabriel Attal as the Prime Minister and gave him the job of putting together a government, as stated in a message from the president. The head of Macron’s party, Sylvain Maillard, congratulated Gabriel Attal on X (formerly Twitter) and expressed confidence in his ability to represent our values and carry out our plan.
Who is France’s new PM Gabriel Attal?
Gabriel Attal is a good friend of Emmanuel Macron and was the government spokesperson during the Covid pandemic. He’s well-liked by many people in recent surveys and is known for being a smart minister, comfortable both on radio shows and in parliament.
Gabriel Attal will be the youngest prime minister in France and the first to openly say he is gay, according to France MP Patrick Vignal. Vignal also mentioned that Attal is similar to how Macron was in 2017 when he became the youngest leader in modern French history. The MP praised Attal, saying he is clear and has authority.
Why Emmanuel Macron has chosen Gabriel Attal for the post?
Emmanuel Macron has found it challenging to manage a more unsettled parliament since he lost his complete majority in 2022. Working with Gabriel Attal, they can rejuvenate the government, but the opposition leader believes Macron will still be heavily involved in decision-making. Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure expressed that whether it’s Elisabeth Borne, Gabriel Attal, or someone else, he thinks the policies will remain the same.
Gabriel Attal’s political career
Gabriel Attal is now the youngest prime minister in France since World War II, at the age of 34. Before him, Laurent Fabius held this record, becoming prime minister at 37 in 1984. Gabriel Attal is notable for being France’s first openly gay prime minister. He was publicly revealed as gay in 2018 by an old school friend. Back then, he was in a relationship with Stephane Sejourne, who used to be Emmanuel Macron’s political adviser.
