Manohar Joshi, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and a prominent leader of the Shiv Sena, breathed his last today at the age of 86 due to age-related health issues. He passed away at Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai around 3.00 am, where he was admitted on February 21 following a cardiac arrest.

Manohar Joshi’s political career was marked by significant contributions to Maharashtra’s governance and national politics. He served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999, becoming the first leader from the undivided Shiv Sena to hold this position in the state. Additionally, Joshi was elected as a Member of Parliament and served as the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2002 to 2004 during the Vajpayee government.

His demise has elicited condolences from various quarters, including President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. President Murmu praised Joshi’s long public service, sharp intellect, and ability to connect with people across party lines. Prime Minister Modi hailed Joshi as a veteran leader who dedicated his life to public service, emphasizing his tireless efforts for Maharashtra’s progress and notable contributions at the national level.

Speaker Om Birla also mourned Manohar Joshi’s death, highlighting his role in enriching democratic values and establishing parliamentary traditions. Leaders across party lines, including BJP President Jagat Prakash Nadda and Home Minister Rajnath Singh, expressed their condolences, acknowledging Joshi’s significant contributions to Indian politics.

Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray lamented Joshi’s demise as a profound loss for the party, emphasizing his unwavering loyalty and pivotal role during challenging times. Joshi’s funeral will be held later in the day at Dadar Shivaji Park Crematorium, with full state honors.

Born on December 2, 1937, Joshi hailed from the coastal Konkan region of Maharashtra and began his political journey with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He emerged as a key leader of the Shiv Sena in the 1980s, leaving a lasting impact on Maharashtra’s political landscape. His tenure as a legislator, minister, and speaker exemplified his commitment to public service and dedication to the welfare of the people.
