In a significant stride towards enhancing India’s railway infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated approximately 2000 Indian Railways infrastructure projects, collectively valued at over Rs 41,000 crore. Among these initiatives is the ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, aimed at the comprehensive redevelopment of railway stations across the nation.
1. Comprehensive Development: The Ministry of Railways introduced the Amrit Bharat Station scheme with a focus on the continual enhancement of station facilities. This initiative adopts a long-term perspective, encompassing the formulation and execution of Master Plans in stages to upgrade various amenities at stations.
2. Modernization and Accessibility: Under the scheme, 553 railway stations spanning 27 states and Union Territories are set to undergo a transformation. These stations will be redesigned into vibrant ‘City Centers’, integrating modern passenger amenities such as roof plazas, aesthetically pleasing landscaping, intermodal connectivity, and enhanced modern facades. Importantly, accessibility for persons with disabilities will be prioritized, with stations being redesigned to be environmentally sustainable and inclusive.
3. Passenger Experience Enhancement: The scheme emphasizes improving passenger experience through initiatives like free Wi-Fi provision, promoting local products through ‘One Station One Product‘ initiatives, enhancing passenger information systems, and establishing executive lounges. Moreover, designated spaces for business meetings and tailored landscaping will further enrich the station experience.
4. Multimodal Integration and Sustainability: Amrit Bharat Station Scheme places significant emphasis on multimodal integration, integrating stations with surrounding urban areas, and providing facilities for persons with disabilities. Additionally, sustainable solutions such as ballastless tracks and environmentally friendly practices are integral to the scheme’s objectives.
5. Phased Approach and Expansion: Currently, 1318 stations have been earmarked for development/redevelopment under this scheme, with 1251 stations already undergoing development under the ‘Adarsh Stations Scheme’. The phased approach ensures feasibility and long-term sustainability in the implementation of station upgrades.
6. Airport-Inspired Infrastructure: Drawing inspiration from airport infrastructure, the scheme incorporates separate entry and exit points for the convenience of passengers, mirroring the efficiency seen in airport operations.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme signifies a significant leap towards modernizing India’s railway infrastructure while prioritizing passenger comfort, accessibility, and sustainability. By revitalizing railway stations into vibrant hubs of activity and connectivity, the scheme aims to elevate the overall travel experience and contribute to the nation’s economic growth and development.
