Supreme Court Grants AAP Until June 15, 2024, to Vacate Rouse Avenue Offices

The Supreme Court has granted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) time until June 15, 2024, to vacate its offices located at Rouse Avenue in Delhi. This decision comes after the court noted that the land was originally allotted to the Delhi High Court for the purpose of expanding judicial infrastructure.

During the hearing, a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra directed the AAP to approach the Land And Development Office (L&DO) for the allotment of land for its offices. The bench emphasized that the AAP does not hold a lawful right to continue occupying the current premises.

Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing the AAP, argued that the party, being one of the six national parties in the country, deserves better facilities. Singhvi highlighted the discrepancy in treatment, stating, “They are telling us as a national party we get nothing. I’m given Badarpur, while everyone else is in better places.”

In consideration of the impending general elections, the Supreme Court extended the deadline for the AAP to vacate the premises until June 15, 2024. This decision aims to facilitate the utilization of the land allotted for expanding the district judiciary’s infrastructure in an expeditious manner.

Previously, the Supreme Court had instructed the Delhi government and the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court to coordinate efforts to remove the encroachment by the AAP on the land allocated to the High Court at Rouse Avenue.
