Royal Challengers Bangalore, despite participating in 16 IPL seasons, have yet to clinch the coveted trophy. Despite boasting a significant fan base, exceeding that of former champions KKR and Rajasthan Royals, RCB consistently faces criticism as the most scrutinized IPL team. Each season, they enter the tournament as strong contenders on paper, but their fortunes have eluded them over the years.

Notably, RCB showcased brilliance in the 2009, 2011, and 2016 seasons, reaching the final on each occasion. However, luck was not on their side during the title matches. Their record of eight playoff appearances in 16 seasons is commendable, especially when compared to teams like Delhi Capitals (5 appearances) and Punjab Kings (2 appearances). Nevertheless, the absence of an IPL trophy continues to be a persistent disappointment for RCB.

RCB to use ‘Bengaluru’ instead of Bangalore

Throughout the IPL seasons, Virat Kohli’s team has displayed a superstitious streak, often making alterations to logos and jerseys. However, in the 2024 season, they are taking a significant step by changing their name. RCB’s Instagram account recently shared a promotional video featuring Kannada actor Rishabh Shetty, indicating a rebranding initiative. The video hints at the omission of ‘Bangalore’ from their name, with a shift to ‘Bengaluru’.

The city is recognized by both names, Bangalore and Bengaluru, but officially adopted Bengaluru in 2006 to align with its original Kannada pronunciation. However, since the IPL’s establishment in 2008, the franchise has consistently used ‘Bangalore’ in its name. Now, after 16 years, the Bengaluru-based team has opted to alter its name, rebranding as ‘Royal Challengers Bengaluru’. The franchise will formally unveil this change during the RCB Unbox event on March 19.
