New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address at Bharat Tex 2024, pledged to safeguard the autonomy of the middle class from governmental interference, asserting a commitment to uphold this principle over the next five years.
Inaugurating what is touted as one of the largest textile exhibitions globally, PM Modi urged stakeholders in the industry to innovate and explore new markets, emphasizing the pivotal role of private initiative. “Don’t leave this work to the government. It will spoil your efforts,” he cautioned, advocating for a hands-off approach by the state in the lives of its citizens, particularly the middle class.
Reflecting on his tenure, PM Modi underscored his administration’s track record of shielding middle-class interests from undue governmental intrusion over the past decade. “Governments should help the poor to access health and education,” he affirmed, delineating a vision where state intervention is tailored towards addressing socio-economic disparities.

Assuring steadfast support to the textiles sector, PM Modi outlined its strategic importance in India’s trajectory towards becoming a developed nation by 2047. The Bharat Tex 2024 exhibition, spanning four days, serves as a comprehensive showcase of India’s textile value chain, from “farm to foreign via fibre, fabric, and fashion focus.”
This event will not only highlight India’s prowess in the textile sector but also reaffirm its position as a global textile powerhouse, the Centre declared in a statement. Organized by a consortium of 11 Textile Export Promotion Councils, with backing from the Centre, the exhibition boasts over 3,500 exhibitors, 3,000 buyers from 100 countries, and over 40,000 business visitors, alongside participation from textiles students, weavers, artisans, and textile workers.
Reflecting on the sector’s growth trajectory, PM Modi cited a remarkable surge in the valuation of the textile market, which has surpassed ₹12 lakh crore—a testament to sustained progress under his leadership.
There is a 25% increase in yarn, fabric, and apparel production,” he revealed, attributing this growth to robust quality control measures, exemplified by the establishment of 380 new standards by the Bureau of Indian Standards. Additionally, PM Modi highlighted a doubling of foreign direct investment in the sector over the past decade, indicative of burgeoning investor confidence.
In essence, PM Modi’s address at Bharat Tex 2024 encapsulates a vision of economic empowerment, underpinned by a commitment to fostering private enterprise and insulating the middle class from undue governmental interference.
