India and Japan have underscored the importance of adapting their bilateral relationship to address evolving geopolitical, geo-economic, and geo-technological dynamics. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Japanese counterpart Yoko Kamikawa held discussions in Tokyo, emphasizing the need for new measures to enhance cooperation and responsiveness to emerging trends.

During the talks, Jaishankar highlighted the significant progress made in defense and security cooperation between the two countries. He noted the ongoing joint exercise between the Indian Army and Japan’s Self-Defense Force in Rajasthan, highlighting enhanced engagement across all three services and the Coast Guard through reciprocal access to logistics arrangements.

Both sides agreed on the necessity of taking proactive steps to align their relationship with changing global realities. Discussions encompassed areas of military collaboration, including jointness and the exploration of new domains such as cyber and space. Additionally, they reviewed advancements in defense equipment and technology cooperation.

Jaishankar emphasized the potential for substantial Japanese investment in India, particularly from Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), aiming to achieve the shared target of five trillion yen in overall investments. He emphasized the importance of timely execution of flagship projects like the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed railway and welcomed Japan’s developmental contributions to India’s northeastern states.

The ministers also explored opportunities for coordinated development partnerships in third countries, highlighting the transformative impact on connectivity and industry in the region.

Both India and Japan acknowledged the importance of enhancing economic security and supply chain resilience through strategic trade and technology collaborations. Discussions included potential cooperation in the semiconductor ecosystem, green technologies, and digital payments, leveraging their respective strengths.

Addressing mobility concerns, Jaishankar advocated for a more facilitative visa regime for Indian tourists and citizens visiting Japan. He emphasized the shared interest in expanding avenues for Indian talent and skills in Japan, reflecting the commitment to fostering people-to-people exchanges.

The dialogue between India and Japan reflects their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and leveraging mutual interests to address emerging challenges and opportunities in the evolving global landscape.
