Zumba

Zumba’s beginnings may be found in the 1990s, when Alberto “Beto” Perez, a Colombian dancer and choreographer, managed to unintentionally discover the idea that would soon grow into a worldwide fitness trend.

This story opens in Cali, Colombia, Beto’s hometown, in the middle of the 1990s. Fitness instructor Beto realised he had forgotten his go-to exercise music when he was on his way to give an aerobics class. Not to be discouraged, he used a personal tape library of salsa and merengue to come up with ideas. The idea of mixing Latin music into his workout on the spur of the moment gave rise to the eventual movement known as Zumba.
