Indians rightfully angered: Maldives MP comments on controversy surrounding ministers’ statements.

Amid escalating tensions between Maldives and India over derogatory comments by three Maldivian ministers targeting PM Modi, former Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla termed the remarks “shameful and racist” on Sunday. The ex-speaker apologized to India and urged Indians to cease the boycott campaign against Maldives.

Ms. Abdulla, who is currently serving as an MP, acknowledged that the anger over the comments is justified.

She stated, “Indians have every right to be upset. The remarks are unacceptable. But, it’s important to note that these comments don’t represent the views of the Maldivian people. I personally apologize to the people of India for these disgraceful remarks.”

The row

Trouble started when certain Maldivian ministers made disrespectful comments about India and PM Modi, criticizing his pictures and videos from a visit to Lakshadweep. In response, people on social media suggested considering Lakshadweep as an alternative vacation spot to the Maldives.

Boycott Campaign

The Maldivian MP asked Indians to stop the #BoycottMaldives campaign on social media and encouraged them to return for holidays. Following the dispute, some Indians on social media mentioned canceling their trips to the Maldives, and a few Bollywood stars suggested considering Lakshadweep as another travel option

Words from a couple of individuals don’t represent how all Maldivians view India. We urge Indians to come back to the Maldives and stop the boycott effort,” she expressed.

India-Maldives Ties

Ms. Abdulla emphasized the importance of the strong friendship between India and the Maldives. She highlighted that the island nation relies on India for economic benefits, trade, education, and tourism. Ms. Abdulla expressed hope that the offensive comments were an isolated incident, urging the government to take strict action against those responsible to prevent a recurrence. The three ministers who made the controversial social media posts—Maryam Shiuna, Malsha Shareef, and Mahzoom Majid have been suspended from their positions, according to a statement from the Maldives government.

Relations between the two countries became tense when Mohamed Muizzu, considered a leader leaning towards China, became the President. After taking office, Muizzu called for the removal of Indian troops from the Maldives, citing security reasons. The president is currently on an official visit to China from January 8 to 12.
