Akshay Kumar lends his support to the campaign urging a boycott of Maldives, emphasizing the need to take a stand against hate in the tourism industry.

A growing number of Indian celebrities and social media influencers are aligning with the call to boycott the Maldives, sparked by derogatory remarks made by a Maldivian minister against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The controversy stems from Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep, where he inaugurated development projects and showcased the picturesque beaches. Images of Modi snorkeling gained traction on social media, triggering interest in Lakshadweep among travel enthusiasts.

The discord escalated when Maldives minister Mariyam Shiuna criticized Modi’s visit in a now-deleted post on X, prompting some Maldivian netizens to make racist and insulting comments targeting Indians. The clash of opinions initiated an online campaign urging people to avoid Maldives and support alternative destinations.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra recently joined the movement, expressing his stance on X by highlighting that “‘India Out’ was a part of the manifesto. Maldives voted for it. Now, it’s up to us, Indians, to choose wisely. I know that my family will. Jai Hind.”

This escalating tension raises questions about the impact of diplomatic incidents on tourism and highlights the role of influential figures in shaping public opinion. As the boycott gains momentum, it remains to be seen how it will influence travel decisions and whether diplomatic channels will be engaged to address the underlying issues between the nations.

Akshay Kumar spoke out against the Maldives junior minister’s comments, stressing the importance of dignity. He encouraged supporting Indian tourism and exploring the beautiful islands within the country.

Sachin Tendulkar actively participated in an online initiative to promote India’s scenic beaches and tourist destinations, although he didn’t specifically mention Maldives in his endorsements.

Sonam Mahajan urged fellow Indians to reconsider their travel plans to the Maldives following controversial remarks by a Maldivian minister. In a tweet, she emphasized choosing destinations like Lakshadweep, highlighting the importance of supporting places that foster positive sentiments towards Indian visitors.
