The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) received a significant reprieve on Tuesday as the United World Wrestling (UWW) lifted the suspension imposed on the Indian body, allowing Indian wrestlers to compete under their national flag once again.
UWW’s decision came after a review meeting held on February 9, where it was decided that the suspension on WFI would be lifted with immediate effect.
The provisional suspension was initially imposed on Wrestling Federation of India on August 23 last year due to the federation’s failure to conduct elections within the stipulated time frame.
The UWW Disciplinary Chamber found sufficient grounds to impose the provisional suspension, which lasted for six months. However, following a review of the situation, UWW decided to revoke the ban under certain conditions.
One of the conditions set by UWW is for Wrestling Federation of India to reconvene the elections of its Athletes’ Commission, with active or recently retired athletes eligible to participate. These elections must take place no later than July 1, 2024.
Additionally, WFI must provide written guarantees to UWW ensuring that all wrestlers will be considered for participation in WFI events without discrimination, including trials for the Olympic Games and other major national and international events.
The decision brings relief to Indian wrestlers who had to compete under the UWW flag during the suspension period.
The wrestling landscape in India witnessed significant developments after the conclusion of the Wrestling Federation of India elections, including the suspension of the body by the Sports Ministry and the formation of an ad-hoc committee to oversee its operations.
The emotional aftermath of the elections saw veteran wrestlers like Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and Vinesh Phogat making headlines with their announcements and actions, reflecting the intensity of the situation within the Indian wrestling community.
With the lifting of the suspension, Indian wrestlers can now focus on preparing for upcoming competitions and proudly represent their country on the international stage once again.
