A tumultuous situation has engulfed Uttarakhand’s Haldwani city, with reports emerging of four casualties and 250 individuals sustaining injuries during violent clashes on Thursday. The unrest ensued following the demolition of an allegedly “illegally built” madrasa, triggering widespread chaos and prompting authorities to impose stringent measures to restore order.
The genesis of the violence stems from the demolition of the madrasa located in Haldwani’s Banbhoolpura area, which was constructed without proper authorization on government-owned land. Senior Superintendent of Police Prahlad Meena disclosed that prior notice had been issued concerning the unauthorized construction.
The situation escalated dramatically as locals vehemently opposed the demolition efforts, resulting in a fierce confrontation between the authorities and protesters. The deployment of a bulldozer to dismantle the madrasa acted as a catalyst, prompting mobs to retaliate by pelting stones and engaging in acts of vandalism. Subsequently, law enforcement personnel responded with tear gas to quell the unrest, but the clashes persisted, exacerbating the crisis.
Amidst the turmoil, more than 250 individuals, including 50 policemen, bore the brunt of the violent clashes, sustaining injuries in the process. To contain the volatile situation, authorities have also implemented a complete shutdown of internet services, exacerbating the sense of tension and uncertainty gripping the region.
In response to the escalating crisis, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has convened a high-level meeting with senior officials to address the prevailing unrest in Haldwani.
